Yo no maté a Federico
Mayoral, Carlos
An adolescent Germán Monteverde accompanies his day laborer father, Enrique, to visit different landowners for whom he collects tobacco from the plantations of La Vega de Granada. One summer afternoon in 1935 they will go to the Huerta de San Vicente, the house of Federico García, one of the gentlemen for whom he works. A leafy garden, full of jasmine, rose bushes and pomegranate trees, opens the way to a distinguished white house. It is the first time that the young Germán sets foot on a farm of these characteristics. They make them wait in the living room, surrounded by dark furniture, tapestries, portraits. At the same time, a piano melody, which seems to be part of a dream, surrounds the objects and slowly reaches Germán's ears, who enjoys the music. Federico García Lorca will be on keyboard and that meeting will change the young man's destiny, when the poet generously offers to give him piano lessons. He can't know yet. The winds of war had not been unleashed on the Peninsula, with its wave of crimes, of misfortune. Over the years, in the terrible decade of the forties, Germán lives in the back of the tobacconist's shop owned by Mrs. Barcina, a war widow, who offers him a bed, blanket and chickpeas. Poverty gets around it thanks to the solidarity of the old neighbors and the black market, like so many others. But Captain Nestares crosses his path, aggressive and arrogant, who is rumored to have had Federico's life and death in his hands. Another twist of fate will be launched when the captain crosses the threshold of the Barcina tobacconist to arrest Germán accused of smuggling.
