Visionarios y visionarias en la España moderna
la política y el espíritu
Ibáñez Castro, Juan
The men and women of modern Spain considered the visionary world as a real part of their lives. They looked for explanations for all types of personal and collective situations in the marvelous. At the same time, the supernatural brought them closer to divinity, towards which they directed their existence. In the visionary category we find prophecies, revelations, apparitions, ecstasies, raptures, visions, etc., experiences that opened the door to an intimate religiosity that threatened the leading role of the Church, as well as allowing experimentation with behaviors considered heterodox. And always within the framework of the messianism that legitimized the Catholic monarchy. For all these reasons, it is not surprising that during the three modern centuries these characters ended up before the courts of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, where the scope of their figures and messages was settled according to their circumstances and those of the historical context. To enter this world of diffuse borders, it is necessary to know its themes, profiles (with a special female presence) and problems through the dialogue and conflict that the visionaries and inquisitors maintained between the 16th and 18th centuries.
