Thus begins the advertisement in which Rose Llewellyn, a widow of "good manners and exceptional disposition," offers herself in the fall of 1909 as a housekeeper; Her phrase immediately catches the attention of Oliver Milliron, a widower with three children and little skill in housework, who hires her to put some order in her house in Marias Coulee, Montana. And so also begins the unforgettable season that Rose and her brother Morris, a know-it-all dandy, will spend in this farming town. When the local teacher runs off with a preacher, Morris is forced to take his job; His particular teaching methods will forever mark the young students of the rural school.
