Una mañana perdida
Premio de la Unión de Escritores de Rumanía
Adamesteanu, Gabriela
It is a cold winter morning, back in the seventies of the last century; Vica leaves her battered husband locked up at home and walks alone through the streets of Bucharest. She wants to visit her sister and then she will go to the mansion of her former employer to chat for a while, exchange food and reminisce about the old days. Loaded with bags, wrapped in an old shawl and endless scarves, this unforgettable woman walks the streets of the capital and tells us about her life and that of the whole of Romania, because each one of the people she meets that apparently lost morning they are the embodiment of their country's history. Vica listens, remembers and, above all, comments with us, the readers, on what her life has been like, starting from small details and using a language that seems to have been raised on the same street. This is how a few hours that seem to pass between frivolous chats, queues at bus stops and useless waiting in front of closed doors, are transformed into an epic of everyday life.
