Un hijo extranjero
Berti, Eduardo
Some time after publishing the novel A Foreign Father, Eduardo Berti receives an unexpected mail: some photocopies of the file that his father, born in Romania, presented in 1950 to obtain Argentine nationality. There are all or almost all the data that his father hid or altered after his emigration to Argentina, including some secrets that he took with him to the grave: his real last name, his real date of birth, the name of the ship that transported him from Europe to America just before World War II and the exact date that ship arrived at the port of Buenos Aires, the same port where the father began the reinvention of his public identity. The thick file, sent by a friend and reader, also brings something even more surprising: the address of the father's birthplace, in the Romanian city of Galati, on the banks of the Danube, next to the Moldovan border, which convinces Berti to finally travel to that place that had always been an "imagined country" for him.
