Tranvía a la malvarrosa

Tranvía a la malvarrosa

Vicent, Manuel

Against a background of famous crimes in that Valencia still orphaned of the fifties the conscience of the protagonist develops. The crime of the poisoner, the vile club to that schizophrenic who murdered and covered the girl with flowers before depositing her in a ditch, the appearance of the waxed legs of a man with painted nails inside a sack: through this geography of memory a tram with a planter crossed the city and headed to the Malvarrosa beach. In that space, the protagonist forgot the neurosis of his father, the torture of a religious education, the sordidness of that time. From the bottom of adolescence he arrived in Valencia one day when all the shop windows of the pastry shops exhibited the image of General Franco made from candied fruits. Any hero has to go on a journey to find himself. The initiation journey between adolescence and youth is carried out by the protagonist of this story on a tram to Malvarrosa beach, where freedom was conquered and innocence was left behind along with the swimsuit forgotten under an oleander bush.
