Sófocles

With the tragedies of Sophocles (5th century BC), it could be said that the theater reaches its full consolidation as a literary genre in the modern sense of the term. On the one hand, a series of formal innovations are introduced that will give the theater piece a largely definitive stage profile. And, on the other hand, that is at the service of more important underlying interests: Sophocles embodies the problem of the isolated individual, represented in the tragic hero who is characterized by extraordinary greatness, suffering loneliness and tragic impotence in the face of superior forces. In addition, he is an excellent witness to the ideological concerns of the exciting time in which he lived and which was fundamental in the intellectual evolution of the West.
