In his meditation, addressed to all men, on the pain of the world, suicide and the will to live, Schopenhauer intends to show us, raising the flag of a pessimistic humanism, other deeper truths, although more disturbing, about our nature that have impressed seriously to such relevant figures of our century as Tolstoy, Freud, Wittgenstein, Horkheimer, Thomas Mann and Charles Chaplin. The current movement for the liberation of animals has in these pages one of its best and least known antecedents.
