Recuerda Sefarad
magia, vida y muerte en la Aljama
XI Premio Juan Antonio Cebrián

On March 31, 1492, the Catholic Monarchs signed a royal provision that ordered "all Jews, of whatever age, who live and dwell and are in the said our kingdoms and lordships, both natural and non-native naturals (...) let our kingdoms and lordships come out of all the said ones with their sons and daughters and servants and maids and Jewish relatives, both large and small, of whatever age they may be...". That decision meant the expulsion of thousands of Jews from a land they called Sepharad and which was also their homeland. Behind them they left a past in which literature, astronomy, Kabbalah, medicine, poetry and philosophy had reached the most exalted heights. They had also been the bridge that allowed Arab wisdom to reach Europe thanks to their work as translators. That decree forgot the contribution of figures such as Maimonides, Hasday ibn Saprut or Moisés de León, to whom the writing of the Book of Splendor is attributed, one of the crowning works of the Kabbalah.
