Memorias

del cine en la Transición

Ungría, Alfonso

If these memoirs are unique, it is because those written by film directors are scarce throughout the world. But they are also peculiar because Alfonso Ungría is peculiar within his profession. An author whose work many celebrate as "coherent", perhaps because he has always preserved artistic freedom against the usual commercial norms. They are also a clear testimony, which the author relates as a protagonist and as a witness, of two significant stages: the Franco regime and the long Transition, showing the successive transformations of Spanish cinema, its financing, the role of its producers and the "majors" USA, ministerial laws, festivals, TVE, etc. Some changes experienced through a filmography built after many battles and failures. And often, the adventures of getting a film made or saving it from cuts or censorship are the story of an adventure, full of suspense and incidents, that fascinates us all (whether we are filmmakers or viewers).
