Los coptos
últimos herederos
Barba Colmenero, Vicente
Between Pharaonic Egypt and the arrival of Islam, almost seven hundred years passed during which the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire dominated the lands of the pyramids. In that world, born of a unique religious and cultural syncretism, the Coptic community arose. Among the Copts, the symbol of the cross was illuminated, whose use spread from Alexandria throughout the Mediterranean. It was among these communities that an art unique in the world developed. The phenomenon of monasticism also had its origin in the Nile Valley and in these monasteries a Christian literature written in its own fascinating language developed. Despite the threat of a growing Islamization of Egypt, the Copts have always considered themselves as Egyptian as anyone else. The very word "Coptic" comes from the Greek word aigyptios which can be translated as "Egyptian". They are the true heirs of the pharaohs and the classical tradition.
