An elderly homeless man is found dead on the road between King's Langley and Berkhampstead. The only clue, tied to the top button of his tattered coat, is a piece of cardboard on which the word "Three" is written. Shortly thereafter, Aloysius Skinner, president of the Imperial Cochineal company, is mysteriously shot to death while riding in the back seat of a taxi. Next to his body, the police discover another similar note, only the number varies: "Four". The situation becomes even more disturbing when a professor of classical literature, Oliver Maddock, is murdered during a family celebration, thus joining the macabre group with the number "Five". Inspector Dewar and Superintendent Bone of Scotland Yard will have to connect all the dots of a nebulous plot whose ramifications extend from the English countryside to the distant South Africa, while posing two pressing enigmas: where are the victims? One and two"? And above all, how far will the deadly silent killer sequence go?
