Las intermitencias de la muerte
Saramago, José
In a country whose name will not be mentioned, something never seen since the beginning of the world occurs: death decides to suspend its lethal work, people stop dying. The collective euphoria is unleashed, but very soon it will give way to despair and chaos. There are plenty of reasons. If it is true that people no longer die, that does not mean that time has stopped. The destiny of humans will be an eternal old age. Ways will be sought to force death to kill, consciences will be corrupted in the "gentlemen's agreements" between political power, mafias and families, the elderly will be detested for having become immovable hindrances. Until the day when death, dressed as a woman, returns to decipher an enigma, meets a musician, listens to a concert, establishes a relationship, listens to Bach again... Then the novel continues as life continues, with all its contradictions.
