Two girls are forced to share a room in a shelter. One white and one black. Both immediately reject each other, but little by little they realize that they have more in common than they bargained for. "Salt and pepper", as others begin to call them, become inseparable, and over time they meet in different places: a restaurant, a supermarket, a demonstration, always on opposite sides of social conflicts. . In the only account of her that she ever wrote, the great Morrison imagines the map of racial identities in alternate ways and places the reader at the center of one of her most complex literary experiments.
