La vuelta de tuerca
James, Henry
On Christmas Eve, some friends gather by the fire ready to enjoy an evening listening to stories of supernatural events. When the protagonist of a ghost story is a child, argues one of those gathered, this adds something of a twist to the impression it makes on the listener. What if they were two children?... Next, he proposes that those present read a story that was sent to him in writing by the one who was the governess of her sister, now deceased, and who claimed to have lived in her own flesh. The first-person narrative begins when the governess answers an advertisement to take care of two orphaned children. Her interest, the children's uncle, demands only one condition: that in no case should she request her help from now on. Miles and Flora are two charming siblings and her educator soon develops a great affection for them. Miles has just been expelled from his school without being very clear about the reason, which the boy does not seem very willing to reveal. But this is not the only mystery that torments the narrator, she also believes she has caught a couple of sinister visitors wandering around Bly, the impressive country house, when she was alone... The ambiguity of the situations and attitudes of the characters, together with the suspicion that perhaps the governess is hiding some details from us, endow the story with different possible interpretations and a wealth of nuances that are unusual in this type of story.
