La cultura del narcisismo

La cultura del narcisismo

la vida en una era de expectativas decrecientes

Lasch, Christopher

When this work was first published in 1979, Christopher Lasch was hailed as a "biblical prophet" (Time). His identification of narcissism not just as an individual ailment, but as a burgeoning social epidemic, was groundbreaking. But his diagnosis of American culture is even more relevant today, as he predicts the unlimited expansion of the greedy, anxious, narcissistic self into all walks of life. Lasch argues that the social evolution of the 20th century gave rise to a narcissistic personality structure, in which the fragile self-concept of individuals had given rise, among other things, to a fear of commitment and lasting relationships, to a fear of aging - that is, the "youth culture" of the 1960s and 1970s - and an unlimited admiration for fame and celebrity - fueled by the film industry and fostered by television. In this energetic work, Lasch calls for a return to the community, to schools that teach history and not self-esteem, and he does so in an unbiased way, looking at the lessons of American history.
