Jacobo
el duque de Alba en la España de su tiempo
García Hernán, Enrique
The biography of the Duke of Alba (1878-1953) has drawn the attention of historians of the Contemporary Age. He himself, consistent with the importance of his life, writes his "Memoirs". Specialists in the cultural history of postwar Spain also realized the importance of his biography, framing it in what has come to be called the Silver Age. Historians of the Civil War and of the Second World War regarding Spanish-British relations do take into account the important political role of him as ambassador in London (1937-1945). What is really known about his activity, his life and his work? The Arabist Emilio García Gómez writes that he can be called the second Grand Duke, because he believes that he has created a certain type of new aristocratic life, of saving noble houses from almost general ruin and turning to the service of the king and the country. . He says that he is the highest representative of the Silver Age of Spanish society from 1920 to 1931, with an unwavering loyalty to the Crown, the same one that took him to the embassy in London and forced him to leave it, and with a certain prophetic courage he adds that one day perhaps the causes of his political silence will be known. The author of this biography analyzes the character using not only the important sources of the Duke of Alba's personal archive, but also many other sources from his contemporaries, and offers us a new vision of a little-known character and, above all, of the complexities that surrounded him during his life course.
