Historia de la tolerancia en España

The word tolerance has had and continues to have a bad press in our country. More than a virtue, it has traditionally been valued as weakness. Historically, the discourse of intolerance has prevailed in Spain, almost always linked to that of the Inquisition. And, of course, from beyond our borders Spaniards have been permanently judged as alleged agents and patients of a history of intolerance and repression. This book shows that the term tolerance is polysemic. Alongside the classic sense of freedom of conscience, the concept of tolerance is influenced by other meanings: indulgence or grace, which is the elusive behavior of a superior with respect to the punishment deserved by an inferior, the commitment to the lesser evil with a pragmatic sense (it is tolerant while lacking the strength to be intolerant), relativistic skepticism, popular doubt and confusion product of ignorance, the strategy of dissimulation and avoidance of compromise.
