Historia de la decadencia y caída del Imperio romano
Gibbon, Edward
According to Gibbon himself, on October 15, 1764, in Rome, while meditating "among the ruins of the Capitol", he had "the idea of writing about the decline and fall of the city", a project, however, to which he seemed doomed throughout his life and intellectual career. A great scholar, interested in all disciplines, with an enlightened disposition and contrary to all prejudice or superstition, Gibbon's admiration for classical civilization prompted him to search in history for the reasons for the progressive deterioration of the ideals of political and intellectual freedom. The abbreviated version that we present here, prepared by Dero A. Saunders in 1952, condenses the most relevant aspects of this great work, mainly from its first half. Undoubtedly, Decadence and Fall constitutes one of the key works to understand the foundations of Western culture
