Estudi en escarlata ; El signe dels quatre
Doyle, Arthur Conan
This volume brings together the first two novels about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes: Study in Scarlet (1887) and The Sign of the Four (1890). And as in most narratives starring Holmes, it is Dr. Watson, his inseparable companion, who narrates the story. In the first, Study in Scarlet, Dr. Watson, a military doctor who is forced to retire to due to an injury, he arrives in London looking for a flat that is not too expensive and soon finds himself sharing an apartment in Baker Street with a certain Sherlock Holmes who works as a detective and is famous for his eccentricities. Thus, Holmes and Watson end up in a mysterious case that, although at first glance it looks like a random murder, in the eyes of the detective it has all the components of being a revenge that has been carefully prepared: mysterious letters written in blood on the wall and the strange relationship with a Mormon sect do nothing but confirm this. In the second novel, The Sign of the Four, the detective Sherlock Holmes must solve an intrigue that has its origin in colonial India. Mary Morstan, an attractive young woman with whom Watson falls completely in love, enlists the help of the famous detective to discover who is behind the valuable pearls that she has been receiving one by one and anonymously every year since the disappearance of his father, a captain in the Indian Army who was lost ten years ago under mysterious circumstances.
