El último círculo del infierno
Figueroa, Alberto
In 2013, the Colombian police arrested Marcos Orbea Ugarte, alias Txistu, for arms trafficking. Historical head of ETA, he had disappeared thirty years ago, and a vigilante group claimed responsibility for his execution. His appearance causes a great upheaval in Okuri, his hometown, where part of the population still considers him a martyr. But the surprise is capitalized when Txistu declares himself to the Colombian police as an agent of the Spanish secret services. The reappearance of Txistu shocks Álvaro Urízar, known as Gorri, in a very special way, and opens new questions about the role that Txistu could have played when, in 1985, eta, after being accused of treason, he murdered Martín Zaldúa, a close friend of Gorri . Txistu, Martín and Gorri had grown up together in Okuri, and the latter had interceded with Txistu, then leader of the organization, to prevent Martín's assassination. However, the murder was carried out, despite the guarantees that Gorri had obtained to the contrary and transmitted to the threatened man. Moved by the feeling of guilt, Gorri initiates a private investigation to clarify the reasons for the murder of Martín Zaldúa, based on three key questions: did Txistu really try to prevent Martín's execution? Or rather, did he use Gorri to prevent Martín from escaping and thus facilitate his murder? Who was really Martín Zaldúa? In line with Gorri's investigations, the narration, which takes place in the present, projects two ramifications towards past times. One of them goes back to the Basque Country and Cuba in the 19th century, to slavery and the sugar mills, where the deep enmity between the Txistu family, the Ugarte, and the Zaldúa family, Martín, sinks its roots. The other delves into the dark 80s of the last century, in search of the circumstances that prompted Txistu to collaborate with the Spanish secret services.
