El Periódico
25 años de auge y catarsis del periodismo en Internet
Ramírez, María
The last twenty-five years have been perhaps the most eventful in the history of newspapers in terms of the revolution in tools and the global impact of what we do. At a time like this, of boiling information and also of confusion about what journalism is, I was especially interested in looking back and telling, through my personal experience, the life of newsrooms between illusions, disappointments and the infinite energy that they always give us the news. The press is always looking for a way and finds it more often than it seems. The newspaper has changed and is constantly facing new dilemmas. It is becoming increasingly clear that its business model is only truly lucrative for a few media outlets in the world. But not only has it survived the internet, but in many cases it has flourished in its era. The proof of this is the coverage of the turbulence of recent years, from the victory of Donald Trump and Brexit to the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The lesson is that the greatness of newspapers lies in their newsrooms, their mission and their most basic work that is successful when resources and priorities are at the heart of information. It cost them, but in the end the winners of the new era of online journalism have been the New York Times, the Washington Post or even the Boston Globe, and not so much Buzzfeed, Vox Media and other startups that were supposed to reinvent the model of business because we journalists weren't capable of doing it.
