El mundo de piedra
Agee, Joel
In a house with a large garden in an unnamed Mexican town in the late 1940s, six-and-a-half-year-old Peter reads, dreams, and plays with his friends. He is an explorer, artist, philosopher, mystic, and scientist. His world is still new, he is not yet contaminated by received knowledge. And the real world that surrounds him is unique at that time: a community of exiles who have found refuge in Mexico from the fascist regimes of Europe, hobnobbing with Mexican trade unionists or artists like Frida Kahlo. But the émigrés are homesick, including Peter's stepfather, who wants to return to his native Germany. Returning may not be safe, however, leading to agonizing arguments between Peter's parents and his small group of friends. And little by little, Peter begins to understand that his world could turn upside down, that he might be forced to say goodbye to everyone he knows and loves: his best friend, Aron; his father's friend, Sándor, who talks about revolution and does magic tricks; and Zita, the family maid, who has taught him the consoling mysteries of prayer.
