El césped de manzanilla
Wesley, Mary
August 1939. In the family home in Cornwall, on top of a cliff, the five Cuthbertson cousins gather as they do every summer: the eldest, Oliver, has just returned, wounded, from the Spanish Civil War; the youngest, Sophy, is ten years old and madly in love with him. The games of their golden youth are about to end, however: the war separates them and marks them forever. Those six years of battles and bombing take some casualties, but those who survive do so, so to speak, in a big way. Especially women, who discover that only by living against the rules is it possible to live: "It was the way we rebelled against our education", declares one of them; and she might add: against morality. Forty-five years later, they meet at a funeral and remember, because "the memory comes to illuminate the image that was not clear in its day".
