El censor de Shakespeare

Valladolid, 1624, Seminary for the English of San Albano. Monsignor William Sankey, Jesuit censor of the Inquisition, arrives with a mission: to decide whether to include in the Index of Prohibited Books a volume found in the seminary library: the folio edition that posthumously brings together thirty-six of the dramas written by William Shakespeare. The task presents Sankey with a difficult moral dilemma, for William was his close friend, his soul mate. Both had been born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1564 under the sign of Taurus -ambitious and loyal- and that of the old Catholic faith in a time of prohibition of their worship, persecutions and executions, which would not end with the so-called Peace of London in 1604, but would resurface with the Gunpowder Plot and drag on until the Thirty Years' War. Throughout their parallel lives they loved each other and confronted each other after sharing the dangerous historical events of the time together with the most important characters, both English -Francis Bacon, Walter Raleigh, the counts of Southampton and Essex, the Cecils- and Spanish -Antonio Pérez, the Duke of Lerma, the Count of Gondomar-. Everything they shared and everything that separated them assault Sankey's trial, who, when confronted with his friend's work, will remember their parallel lives to determine if, like the phoenix, William Shakespeare deserves to rise, eternally, from his ashes.
