The body of a man with a disfigured face is discovered at dawn in a Tokyo station. Identification of the body is complicated and the Police hardly have any clues. Inspector Imanishi will have to put aside his precious bonsai trees and his haikus for a while to immerse himself in an investigation that turns out to be fruitless; After weeks of chasing false leads, the Police decide to close the case, but the stubborn inspector does not allow himself to leave any loose ends. An unexpected discovery will lead him to continue his investigations in different parts of the country, from the humble mountain villages to the intellectual circles of Tokyo.
