Diarios en la vieja rectoría (1842-1843)
Hawthorne, Nathaniel
Hawthorne, Sophie
For the first time in Spanish, in a careful edition by Lorenzo Luengo, Siruela publishes the diaries of Sophia and Nathaniel Hawthorne between 1842 and 1843, a vivid portrait of an era that marked the course of literature and philosophy of our time . Diaries in the Old Rectory is an approach to the first year of living together of the famous writer Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Sophia, when, newlyweds, they settled in a house in Concord. It is also the exploration of an environment yet to be discovered, of a natural and cultural landscape, where such outstanding personalities as Thoreau and Emerson, leading figures of transcendentalist thought, coincided. This philosophy, which emerged in part as a reaction to the impact that the Industrial Revolution had on nature and the social order, is manifested in these pages in that way, sometimes overwhelmed, sometimes exalted, with which the married couple take care of each piece of the garden, the fruits of the land and the banks of the river that passes by his home, in what is a moral lesson, elegantly described and with a depth as wise as it is moving, for our days.
