Cuando allí arriba los abedules reverdecen
Smolnikar, Breda
In the years immediately before the First World War, Slovenia, like many other European territories, was bleeding to death in a mass migration to the United States, the new Promised Land. The lively and active Rozina, along with her compatriot and future husband Brinovc, are part of the passage of one of the many ships that crossed the Atlantic in search of a better future. In an unknown and foreign society, Rozina, passionate and enterprising, will display her innate ability to turn threats into opportunities, and thus she will be able, for example, to carry out a prosperous business of making and selling brandy in full Prohibition Law. In the interwar period, the couple, leaving their young daughter in the United States, decides to return to Europe, where they see better prospects to continue their business. The outbreak of World War II deprives them of any possibility of returning to America, and Rozina will have to face endless dangers and threats, until, after the death of her husband, she will finally be able to return to the United States, where she will dedicate herself in body and soul to free his people from poverty.
