Cervantina

Fuentes Gómez, René
Cervantina is the incomplete sum of the novels written by Nandito: provincial, rowdy and neighborhood poet, who refused until his death to be called by his name: Fernando Manzano. In the development of the novels, the stories and characters of Bayamo appear, "a place" in the Cuban East. According to his neighbors, he went crazy reading books on obsolete ideologies. Books that they did not want to keep or dare to throw away. And Nandito, with no other "hacienda" than a typewriter named Juanita and an old bicycle that he inherited from his father, walks those dirt streets and without permission narrates about the living and the dead, about those who left the country and of those who stayed, of the loves and hates between neighbors and relatives. That's how crazy his literary adventure is, until one day he breaks the machine and says that he won't write anymore, that he will devote himself to dancing. And he comes out in the congas at a carnival, where he is stabbed to death. Who killed Nandito? That question comes to be the choral narration of his latest novel. He is no longer physically present, but his characters testify to how his neighbors, friends and enemies have sufficient reasons to acclaim and claim the contents of his books.
