Salabert, Juana

An ordinary morning in an indeterminate city in the north of the country, the Finis of almost all of Juana Salabert's novels. There are tourists, travelers, grandparents walking their grandchildren, unemployed "in the sun", workers, citizens of all classes and ages. And suddenly the unspeakable bursts in, the terror that is not immediately identifiable, but of which we have already accumulated too many direct and indirect experiences. A group of radical Islamists take hostages at the Finis theater. The theater is a singular architectural work crowned by a fresco dominated by a great siren and a hippocampus. Nameless violence is tied to the lives of the characters, their time is running out. Before the horror arises human dignity, beauty, the last gesture, the stories. And recent history is present in all lives, the ties with the past of migrations, escapes, exiles, disappointments, betrayals, angry searches for meaning and also deep affections. A story that we have not yet read, born from the need to give voice to the residue of fear and dejection that has shaken our certainties and that has its counterpart in the vitality of dignity and dedication, in the beauty and truth of literature, in narration as survival.
