A propósito de Lady Chatterley

Lawrence, D. H.

Beyond the literary importance of Lady Chatterley's lover, it is undeniable that his fortune is due, in part, to the censorship effort to ban one of the most controversial novels in the history of literature. D. H. Lawrence began writing it in 1926 (he came to write three different versions; the second, published in this same collection) and published it in Italy two years later. The book was immediately labeled obscene and censored in several countries, and in England until 1960. The controversy that arose did not leave the author indifferent, who, in 1929, a few months before his death, decided to write this plea against the accusations that the hypocrisy of the well-thinking world of the time directed against his work. He accompanies this text with an essay, also from 1929, which complements his thesis, entitled Pornography and obscenity. With very direct and passionate language, this book is not only a vehement defense of freedom of expression and literature, but also of sex as an indissoluble part of the harmony between body and mind of every human being.
