For the best columnists, current events are an accessory element to their prose, a justification like any other for talking about what they consider important in life, what defines them. We know about José F. Peláez that he hates summer, that he has a Stakhanovist routine, that he appreciates beauty in art, that he lives his faith without falling into debauchery, and that he reveres bars and his waiters.
