Washington Square
James, Henry
In the mid-19th century, when the new emerging classes were already beginning to move to northern Manhattan, a wealthy and prestigious New York doctor built a house for himself in Washington Square. It is a "pretty, modern house" with a terrace and a marble porch. He moves to live with her sister, a romantic and sentimental widow, a friend of secrets, and her only daughter Catherine, who at twenty-five has not managed to be, according to her father, neither beautiful nor intelligent. Catherine is due, however, a considerable inheritance, and when a handsome and charming young man appears in her life, although without a trade or benefit, the doctor has no doubt that he cannot be attracted by any quality of his daughter that is not the money.
