Vidas de mujer que el cine cuenta
García, María Ángeles
An exhaustive study of the more than one hundred years of cinema, from the great productions to the most unknown films. A journey in which the gaze on women has conditioned, not only these, but also the whole of society. This book is divided into two parts. The first one takes a tour of how women have been portrayed in films throughout the history of cinema. From the earliest years to the present day, where female characters have evolved from mere objects within a film to gradually gaining prominence by themselves and not as part of a plot designed for men. The author tells us about a society in which such a relevant industry has maintained a discourse in which women, their desires, passions, and feelings were ignored, a problem that generated to a great extent little or no possibility that women They could be reflected, or identified, with the protagonists of the films that flooded the cinemas, and this lack of references has been, and still continues to be in some areas, a problem that every modern and free society must face and correct. The second part of the book reviews the filmic biographies of historical women, the way in which they have been portrayed, comparing the merits of each one from the historical point of view and how they have been taken to the cinema. In many cases we find aspects that are ignored, due to what we could call "not very feminine"; in other cases, these lives are manipulated to minimize the importance of these women and to strengthen the men who accompanied them. In many cases the film critics themselves, in the press or in books, reviled these films as "films for women." Analyzing the great classics of the cinema from the perspective of a woman who looks for references in stories of other women, whether they are fictitious or real, is a job that shows us that there is still a lot of work to be done, but, above all, that we cannot never conform to what has been achieved in terms of rights, presence or importance.
