Vida líquida
Bauman, Zygmunt
What is "liquid life"? The usual way of living in our contemporary modern societies. It is characterized by not maintaining any specific course, since it is registered in a society that, due to its liquid nature, does not maintain the same form for long. What defines our lives, therefore, is constant precariousness and uncertainty. And the most stubbornly pressing concern is the fear of being caught off guard, of not being able to catch up on fast-moving events, of missing expiration dates, and of being forced to load with useless goods or objects, not to capture the moment when a change of focus becomes peremptory and be relegated. Thus, given the speed of change, life today consists of a (possibly infinite) series of new beginnings... but also of incessant endings. This explains the overwhelming concern in our lives about quick and painless endings, in the absence of which beginnings would be unthinkable. Between the modern liquid arts of living and the skills needed to put them into practice, getting rid of things takes precedence over acquiring them. Once again, Bauman provides us with an accurate, insightful, and immensely moving diagnosis of our societies.
