Viaje a Rusia en 1925
Pla, Josep
In 1925, a few years after the Russian Revolution, the West saw the USSR shrouded in an aura of mystery and strangeness. In this context, Josep Pla, who at the age of twenty-eight had already traveled throughout Europe, went to visit Russia to get a clearer image of that country still under construction. From there came the two texts that make up this volume, for the first time translated into Spanish: Journey to Russia in 1925 and the profile of the Catalan communist Andreu Nin. In Journey to Russia in 1925, we see Pla - a tireless and curious traveler, a brilliant chronicler - approach everything with the charming clean look of youth. He thus he speaks of Moscow - whose color he compares with a "salad of peppers and tomatoes" -, of the Kremlin - "of the best that exists" - and of all kinds of traditional details. But he also approaches with transparent curiosity the red flags with the hammer and sickle, the political organization of Communist Russia and the "logical" Bolshevik revolution. More disbelieving, ironic and characteristic of the best-known Pla, is the tribute (as Pla called his profiles of personalities) dedicated to Andreu Nin, a Catalan politician and trade unionist who welcomed him in Moscow, and who years later would tragically die in Stalinist hands for its Trotskyist affiliation.
