Gaitskill, Mary

Alison, a beautiful teenager, is accidentally discovered by a photographer who soon drags her into the world of fashion and the catwalk. From her native San Francisco she travels to Europe, where she develops a fulminating career. The end of her career coincides with the failure of her love relationship, and Alison moves to New York to build a new life. There she meets Veronica, an eccentric woman a few years older than her. Against all odds, the two women become friends. Their friendship will survive not only Alison's return to the world of fashion, but also Veronica's terrifying descent into the then-unknown hell of AIDS. The memory of her friendship will continue to haunt Alison years later, as she too grows old and ill and questions the meaning of what she experienced and what she became during that time.
