They called it the robbery of the century, even though the century was just beginning. For him they charged and arrested Picasso and Apollinaire, but soon had to let them go and assume they had no idea who had taken the Mona Lisa from their Louvre room. The truth is still being discussed: most likely, the mastermind behind the operation was an Argentine who called himself the Marquis of Valfierno. With this hypothesis, with this dark story, Martín Caparrós builds a novel in which he recreates the life of the swindler who kept France in suspense for years and who confessed, shortly before dying, that he had planned the robbery for the most surprising reason.
