Feldman, Deborah
As a member of the Satmar, a community of ultra-Orthodox Jews from Williamsburg (Brooklyn, New York), Deborah Feldman grows up under a strict code of rules that governs everything from her #Yiddish # language or clothing to her readings and the people with whom you are allowed to relate. As a teenager, she senses that there may be an alternative way of life among the skyscrapers of Manhattan, and she is torn between the responsibility of being a good Hasidic Jew and her yearnings for independence, such as those that nest in the protagonists of Jane Austen's novels or Louisa May Alcott who sneaks up on her family. But she soon finds herself trapped in an arranged marriage that is frustrating, sexually and emotionally. Everything changes when, at the age of nineteen, she gives birth to her son and understands that, despite all the obstacles, she must find a path for freedom for both of them.
