Unión Española de Explosivos

150 años de la empresa que fundó Alfred Nobel

XVIII Premio de Biografía Empresarial, 2019

Ballestero, Alfonso

Unión Española de Explosivos takes a tour of the history of the company that was born in 1872 at the impulse of the discoverer of dynamite, Alfred Nobel, and that in its beginnings was called the Spanish Dynamite Society. The origin of it was a consequence of Nobel's desire to manufacture dynamite in Spain, where he foresaw a significant demand for this product and registered its patent. It came to be considered one of the most important companies in the country. The story continues to this day, in which the company that inherited the core business that began in the indicated year, now called MAXAM, is present in the manufacture and sale of explosives in more than fifty countries. Throughout this long period, the company has had a significant presence in strategic sectors close to the explosives industry, such as chemicals and weapons, but has also diversified its business with activities as disparate as copper mining or real estate projects. In this trajectory, the company has gone through critical moments, in which its very survival has been in doubt. It currently constitutes a business group made up of 140 subsidiary companies throughout the world.
