Alice Dunbar-Nelson belongs to the first generation of people of color born in freedom after the American Civil War. Often classified as a romantic poet and creator of paintings of customs that portray the life of the Creole population of the New Orleans region, she is also an exceptional chronicler of the experience of the black woman of her time, whose poetic, dramatic and journalistic interests and novels go beyond the traditional pictures of Creole life.
