Madness and horror have haunted my life, writes the author. The books I have written do not talk about anything else. After The Adversary, I couldn't take it anymore. I wanted to escape. I thought he was escaping by loving a woman and conducting an investigation. The investigation was about my paternal grandfather, who after a tragic life disappeared in the fall of 1944 and, most likely, was executed for acts of collaboration with the Germans. It is my mother's secret, the ghost that haunts our family. To exorcise him I followed random paths, which took me to a small remote city in the Russian province, where I remained for a long time on the lookout, waiting for something to happen. And it happened: a heinous crime. Madness and horror were overtaking me again. They caught up with me, at the same time, in my love life. I wrote for the woman I loved an erotic story that was to break into reality, and reality thwarted my plans. It plunged us into a nightmare that resembled my worst books and devastated our life and our love. We are talking about all this here: about situations that we create to dominate reality and the terrible way in which it assumes them to respond to us.
