Una jaula en un jardín de verano

Una jaula en un jardín de verano

Drabble, Margaret

Sarah Bennett, recently graduated from Oxford with honors, has spent a few months in Paris and is now returning to her parents' house in Warwickshire to be a bridesmaid at her older sister Louise's wedding to a successful novelist. Louise is "a beauty of those who pull back", of those who were not born "to be second violin"; Sarah, although cute, "sweet and funny", considers herself "a girl with too many studies and no vocation", always second when it comes to comparisons. However, it is not about the topical conflict between "the beautiful one" and "the intelligent one" because both are both things, young ladies of the middle class with gifts and talent to develop them; but they have always treated each other with mistrust, never with "sincere intimacy." Louise's marriage launches her into a world of luxury, glamor and adventure, while Sarah, in the vast and cold London, has a dull job at the BBC, lives in shared flats and feels lonely, with her sparkling and Affectionate boyfriend across the Atlantic, Harvard scholar.
