Una herencia y su historia

Una herencia y su historia

Compton-Burnett, Ivy

An inheritance and its history tells the destiny of three generations of a family of the English rural aristocracy. The novel is set in an old mansion inhabited by the members of this family, who are confronted by an inflexible testamentary disposition, the result, in turn, of illegal sexual relations: the term "legality" is one of the main features of this Icy melodrama, secretly tense, admirably constructed. The family mansion -in a way the true protagonist of the book- seems to have a life of its own: it dominates, controls, suffocates and vampirizes the characters, fulfilling a very precise symbolic ritual, characteristic of the author. Thus, the dining room will be the space for confrontations; the library, on the contrary, the place of serious decisions; in the children's room the voices jump spontaneously discovering the truth, or the secret lives of adults are glimpsed.
