We live in a society that does not teach writing but forces us to know about it. How is it that after years of teaching, many people are unable to write a letter or a report? Does this inability have anything to do with the contempt that some teachers show for literature? Is it possible for someone to improve the quality of what they write without improving the quality of what they read? In the face of the avalanche of textbooks that seek to reduce writing to a technique, in the face of the romantic thesis that reduces writing to talent, the text remains an inseparable mixture of inspiration and craft, of genius and competence, of magic and discipline. That's why the best writing teachers (literary or not) have names like Horace, Flaubert, Poe, or Nabokov.
