Un país posible

manual de reformas políticamente viables

Roldán, Antonio (ed.) (and others)

In 2023, Spain has the same real per capita income as in 2005, while other neighboring countries are much richer than then. This means that in the last eighteen years we have not improved, on average, our standard of living. We find ourselves, therefore, on the path towards two lost decades. There are many reasons that explain how we have gotten here, but a fundamental structural challenge stands out, the most important: Spain is lagging behind in the knowledge race. In A Possible Country, a team of prestigious political scientists, economists and sociologists offers a path of concrete, limited, realistic, evidence-based and politically viable reforms, to change this trajectory and contribute to Spain becoming a leading country in the new economy with a fair and balanced model. To achieve this, it is not enough to implement good reforms in the field of training, education or the university, of course included in this book. It is also essential to transform the mechanisms that hinder equal opportunities, which are many in Spain. Thus, many of the main current challenges are addressed, such as the adaptation of the labor market to the era of automation and the shock of artificial intelligence, measures to achieve affordable housing, policies to reduce the gender gap, reform of the Spanish pension system, proposals to reduce healthcare pressure on primary care, fair decarbonization programs or the rethinking of taxation to reduce inequality and promote inclusive growth, among others.
