Blackwood, Caroline

When the Duke of Windsor died in 1972, his widow Wallis, then seventy-six years old, withdrew from public life entirely. In 1980 The Sunday Times had the idea to commission a report with a new photograph of the Duchess taken by Lord Snowdon and a text by Caroline Blackwood. However, Wallis was under the legal guardianship of Suzanne Blum, an eighty-four-year-old lawyer who protected her to infuriating limits. The report was never published and the author had to wait fifteen years -until the death of the lawyer- to be able to offer her version of what happened to her in The Last of the Duchess (1995). The result is a bloody demystification of the couple who were one of the romantic icons of the 20th century. An ideal text for journalists, as the making of of an impossible report.
