Ucrania 22

la guerra programada

Veiga, Francesc

Why did Russia invade Ukraine in February 2022? What are the reasons for the conflict? When did it really start? Ukraine 22, a nod to the title of the well-known novel by Joseph Heller Trap 22, tells us in a profound and illuminating way, the History of the war in Ukraine. To explain the current Ukrainian conflict, Francisco Veiga goes back to its origins in the period from 1986 to 1991, before the dissolution of the Soviet Union; it goes through the subsequent tensions caused by the energy business, and the Orange Revolution of 2004 and 2005, which turned Ukraine into a key player in the "New Cold War"; addresses the previous conflicts in Georgia, in 2008, and Nagorno-Karabakh, in 2020; continues by the role played by the Euromaidan and Crimea crises in 2014 and 2015, along with the latent war that has been waged in the Donbas since then; to finish delving into the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, which began in the winter of 2022 and has become one of the hot wars of the Post-Cold War, this time on European territory. Veiga analyzes the conflict within the new international paradigm that emerged in the years 2020 and 2021, as a consequence of the Covid pandemic and its economic effects; new military alliances like the Abraham Accords; and the appearance of new international actors such as Turkey, Israel, Poland and Hungary; without forgetting the role played by the European Union, NATO and the United States. At the heart of this historical analysis is the investigative work of Francisco Veiga, Professor of History and author of numerous books on the historical ups and downs of the last hundred years, but also his personal experience as a direct witness on the ground of what happened in all Eastern Europe, before and after the fall of the Wall.
