Ubú rei

Jarry, Alfred

Father Ubu and Mother Ubu kill Wenceslaus, King of Poland, and usurp the throne. Once sovereign, they eliminate their adversaries and Father Ubu assumes all power. With him Alfred Jarry makes a canonical portrait of the mediocre and pompous tyrant who, mired in totalitarian madness, is guided only by greed and vainglory. Outrageous since its premiere, "Ubu roi" is a playful play, a hilarious joke, which broke with traditional theater and which, due to its relentless satirical tone, has become a classic of the denunciation of the bourgeois class and patriarchal society.
