Torquemada, el gran inquisidor
una historia del santo oficio
Vélez, Iván
On the 600th anniversary of the birth of Fray Tomás de Torquemada, no commemorative pomp is foreseen, since the figure of the Dominican has long concentrated all the negative charge attached to the Spanish Inquisition, a true legendary Negro star theme. First inquisitor general of the kingdoms dominated by the Catholic Monarchs, his surname, Torquemada, has become an obscure adjective comparable to fanatic, to intolerant. With this brief but enlightening work, Iván Vélez does not intend to contribute to a whitening process of Torquemada, but rather to try to reconstruct the historical context in which the growth of the figure of that Dominican friar was possible and the scope and meaning that it had. the institution to which he devoted much of his life. An absolutely essential work that outlines a new and well-founded historical portrait of the character, very different from the one that has survived to this day.
